Commission: Gavotte Variations

Commission: Gavotte Variations

The need

Waterloo, Ontario is a hotbed of young composing talent, for whom publication, and income for publication, is often difficult to find.

The project

We commissioned Waterloo-based composer Keenan Reimer-Watts to create a new work, a set of variations based on the theme from Bach’s suite in E major (BWV 1006a). The result marries delicate melodies with more complex and modern passages, and is to be sure a bit of a beast to play. The score is available for free here. A recording of the piece is in process and will be posted when it is ready.

The artist

Keenan Reimer-Watts is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Waterloo, Ontario as well as the founder of communitiesforconservation.org.

The impact

Keenan earned money both for his compositions and for his performance, and was introduced to a number of new fans who have since attended subsequent concerts and begun to follow his work.

Next steps

We are continuing to explore ideas around commissioning and showcasing new creative works across a wide variety of genres and media, such as journalism, visual art, and of course music.
